My Incredible Career after overcoming many obstacles

I left the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), now known as Department of War Education Activity (DoWEA), four years ago. It was an exciting, adventurous, challenging, enjoyable, and eclectic experience. Words cannot fully capture my amazing journey. DoDEA gave me the launchpad I needed to travel the world and spread the influence of Education Technology.

I had boots on the ground as a dedicated teacher in the stunningly beautiful Okinawa, Japan, where I resided on Kadena Air Base, a vibrant hub of military life and culture. The island's lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and rich history provided a unique backdrop for both my professional and personal life. My journey then took me across the vast Pacific Ocean, where I spent valuable time in the Philippines, sheltering at Clark Air Base and Subic Bay. These locations not only offered a glimpse into the diverse cultures of Southeast Asia but also allowed me to engage with the local communities, enriching my experience and understanding of the region.

From the Philippines, I launched into the heart of mainland Japan, taking on the role of District Computer Education Coordinator. This position placed me at the forefront of integrating technology into education, a critical aspect of modern teaching. I worked on Yokota Air Base for an impressive thirteen years, during which I frequently embarked on Temporary Duty (TDY) assignments. These assignments took me to various military installations, including Misawa, Camp Zama, Yokosuka, Iwakuni, Sasebo, Atsugi, and even the luxurious New Sanno Hotel in Tokyo. Each location presented its own challenges and opportunities, allowing me to collaborate with fellow educators and technologists to enhance the learning experience for students.

My commitment to educational excellence led me to participate in a worldwide mission to map the Education Technology Performance Appraisal alongside a global team of DoDEA Education Technologists. This initiative was pivotal in assessing and improving the effectiveness of educational technology across various platforms. As part of this mission, I undertook a lengthy TDY to Germany, landing in the bustling city of Frankfurt. From there, I trotted through Sembach, where I engaged with local educators, and spent time in the breathtaking ski resort town of Garmisch, which offered not only stunning alpine views but also a serene environment conducive to reflection and planning. Additionally, I had the incredible opportunity to spend time in Guam, where I assisted with the start-up of the Department of Defense Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) on that fabulous island. The experience of establishing educational frameworks in such a picturesque setting was both challenging and rewarding, as it allowed me to contribute to the development of quality education for military families. Each of these experiences has profoundly shaped my career and deepened my appreciation for the diverse educational landscapes within the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), which is now the Department of War Education Activity.

After the exhilarating adventures I experienced in the Far East and Europe, I found myself soaring into the vibrant paradise of Puerto Rico, as if I were flying on eagle's wings. The moment I set foot on this enchanting island, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging and excitement. The Caribbean Antilles islands, with their stunning landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, quickly captured my heart and imagination, leaving an indelible mark on my soul. The sparkling turquoise waters, the swaying palm trees, and the warm, inviting sun all contributed to the magical atmosphere that enveloped me.

During my stay, I immersed myself in the lively, fun-loving community of Fort Buchanan, known for its vibrant culture and friendly atmosphere. The people here welcomed me with open arms, sharing their traditions, stories, and laughter. I spent countless hours exploring the local markets, where the air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of Puerto Rican cuisine, and the sounds of salsa music echoed through the streets. Each interaction deepened my appreciation for the island's rich heritage and the warmth of its inhabitants.

Residing in the picturesque town of Guaynabo added to the charm of my experience. This beautiful area, with its lush greenery and stunning views, provided a serene backdrop for my adventures. I would often take leisurely strolls through the streets, admiring the colorful architecture and the vibrant murals that told stories of the island's history and culture. The sunsets here were nothing short of breathtaking, casting a golden hue over the landscape and leaving me in awe of nature's beauty.

As I navigated through my time in Puerto Rico, my heart was inflamed with love for the Home of the Pirates. Antilles High School, in particular, captured my heart in ways I never anticipated. The school was not just an educational institution; it was a hub of creativity, passion, and community spirit. The students and faculty were incredibly passionate about their pursuits, and I found myself inspired by their dedication and enthusiasm. I participated in various activities, from cultural festivals to academic competitions, each event allowing me to forge lasting friendships and create unforgettable memories.

In essence, my journey through the Caribbean Antilles, particularly in Puerto Rico, was a transformative experience that enriched my life. The blend of adventure, community, and cultural immersion left me with a profound sense of gratitude and a longing to return to this tropical haven. The island's vibrant spirit and the connections I made will forever hold a special place in my heart, reminding me of the beauty of exploration and the joy of discovering new places and people.

The names of people and places I fell in love with within DoDEA are too numerous to list. Just remembering the precious interactions brings joy to my heart. Our mission was always clear: children of the Department of Defense, now renamed the Department of War, and military families deserve the best of the best. Educating them with my DoDEA colleagues has been one of the greatest joys of my career.

I now coach, individuals and groups to boldly pursue their aspirations, embarking on growth journeys, navigating career changes, and making moves to have impact while having fun!
